This is an historic moment.\u00a0 Just now Supervisors Eric Mar, London Breed, John Avalos, and Mark Farrell voted unanimously\u00a0to transfer\u00a0the currently\u00a0un-allocated $191,000 from GFTA to San Francisco\u00a0Arts Commissions Cultural Equity Grants.\u00a0 Because GFTA was not able to demonstrate follow through on their promise\u00a0last\u00a0year to fund ‘fragile’ arts organizations,\u00a0the supervisors believed\u00a0it was\u00a0inappropriate to have any new money go towards GFTA. \u00a0No current GFTA grants will be affected.<\/p>\n
The total new monies going to\u00a0the\u00a0SF Arts Commission will be\u00a0$316,000 ($191,000\u00a0re-appropriated from GFTA\u00a0plus the\u00a0$125K already proposed).<\/p>\n
Supervisors\u00a0Mar\u00a0and Breed\u00a0led the way in getting to the root of the inequity at GFTA.\u00a0 When it came to the vote, and\u00a0without hesitation,\u00a0Supervisor Avalos and Farrell voted in favor of the\u00a0transfer.<\/p>\n
While we celebrate incremental gains, our work is not done. \u00a0The ultimate goal of bringing both arts entity together under one roof, where\u00a0both public\u00a0entities share a common programmatic\u00a0and civic\u00a0vision, is still at hand. \u00a0There is a hearing set for\u00a0July 16<\/span>\u00a0regarding the San Francisco’s City Budget Analyst Report about\u00a0the\u00a0San Francisco Grants for the Arts.
